CUMBERLAND COUNTY GREEN INDEPENDENTS FIELD RECORD NUMBER OF LEGISLATIVE CANDIDATES
County Party puts ten State House and three State Senate candidates on the ballot for 2008
Portland Maine - The Cumberland County Green Independent Committee today announced that a record number of Green Independent candidates submitted signature petitions to the Secretary of State qualifying to run for Legislative offices.
Committee Chair, Morgen D'Arc, stated that thirteen Green Independent Legislative candidates representing three Senate districts and ten House districts filed the required signatures.
"We are encouraged that the Green Independent Party presence continues to increase in Cumberland County and that a growing number of Greens want to run for public office and work to improve our state," said D'Arc.
Greens Independents support health care for all, such as a single payer system, economic and social justice, environmental protection, renewable energy, a living wage, a stronger economy and many other solutions to achieve a better quality of life for people in Maine.
"In this election year voters are looking for real change," said Ben Chipman, Board member and former Legislative Aide. "People are frustrated with the way business is being done in Augusta. The Green Independent Party and our thirteen candidates will be proposing sensible solutions to issues that have not been addressed at the state level."
In 2002 five Green Independent candidates ran for legislature, in 2004 ten Green Independent candidates ran for legislature, and in 2006 ten Green Independent candidates ran for legislature, all in Cumberland County.
Former Green Independent Representative, John Eder, served in the Legislature two terms, from 2002 to 2006 serving House District 118, Portland's West End.
